Justin “Big Chief” Shearer, one of the stars of Discovery Channel’s hit street racing show Street Outlaws, unveiled his new ride this morning at the Performance Racing Industry Show and, as expected, set the internet ablaze! After Shearer’s beloved LeMans, dubbed The Crow, was totaled a few weeks ago while filming for an upcoming season of the hit reality program, fans of the show have been very vocal in their predictions for what would replace Chief’s hot rod. Now, we know for sure what Shearer will be driving when making his next run at the infamous Top 10 list. Meet the Crowmod!
Unveiled in the Weld Racing booth this morning to a crowd estimated at more than 200 gearheads, Shearer introduced his new Pro Modified-style 1968 Firebird built by Terry Murphy. It features a host of weight-saving amenities to help get it down the street as quickly as possible. In fact, Shearer said in a post-reveal Q&A session that the new car is a full thousand pounds lighter than the LeMans. And while he will still be running the same Butler Performance Pontiac engine, it will be freshened up and hopefully produce a few more horsepower to propel the svelte new Poncho. Shearer also revealed that he will bolt up a set of small tires in February and make a legitimate run at Lights Out 7 and promoter Donald Long’s $50,000 Radial versus the World payday.
The heart of the ‘Bird will be the same 482-inch Rodney Butler-built Pontiac that powered the GTO. It utilizes a pair of Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, GRP rods, Ross pistons and a Comp Cams camshaft handling the actuation of the valves. It will be force fed by a pair of Precision 88 mm turbochargers and will consume copious amounts of methanol.
Power will be sent rearward to the rear tires via a Rossler 3-speed transmission housed in a Reid case to, in Chief’s own words, “keep from blowing my feet off if there are problems.” Shearer also mentioned that friend and longtime street car badass Jeff Lutz will build the headers and hang the turbos under the hood of the Crowmod. A Mark Williams rearend housing rests between the axles.
The lingering question, of course, is will this be enough to put Shearer back on top as the fastest street-raced car in the nation. As those who follow the show know, Mississippi street racer Kye Kelley has had Big Chief’s number. In fact, when they two have lined up, Kelley has yet to lose to Chief, currently standing at 3-0 versus Shearer. However, the momentum may shift Chief’s way with Kelley’s weight advantage being reduced, if not swinging Shearer’s way, and with the boosted Crowmod boasting significantly more power than Kye’s nitrous mill. Of course, racing on paper proves nothing, but Big Chief vowed this morning to be everywhere Kelley drops his trailer door, ready and willing to go to battle with the current King of the Streets, in an effort to reclaim that title for the 405.
