Racing is a dangerous sport, especially when you talk about those cars making quarter-mile passes in the single digits. It doesn’t take much going wrong to put the driver and his car in extreme danger, and even the most experienced drag racers can fall victim to a mechanical failure or bad decisions. And sometimes, it all boils down to bad luck.We don’t know what the hell happened in this video to cause this ‘63 Corvette drag racer to veer across the drag strip on two wheels, but we do know that the driver, Vic Hernandez, did a hell of a job salvaging what could have been a very nasty crash.

The race, which took place at the El Paso Motorplex, seemed to be just another test and tune night. The cameraman’s focus was not on Hernandez’s ‘Vette, but on the rail in the left lane. The light goes green, the racers take off… and all of the sudden there is a Corvette flying across the drag strip towards the other racer.

Off the line it looks like Hernandez veered hard to the right, over-corrected, and wound up on the two passenger side wheel sliding across the drag strip. Somehow, Hernandez keeps the car from flipping and makes a miraculous recovery. It’s one of those see-it-to-believe-it videos, so take a gander and tell us how the hell did he do that?
