PRI 2024: Comp Turbo CTRX Compressor Wheel Technology

Known for being an innovator in the space with its oilless turbos, Comp Turbos  do not require an oil feed from the engine — making them a great option for flexible installation locations. And they aren’t stopping there. The Pomona, California-based outfit is at it again with the CTRX compressor wheel technology, unveiled at the 2024 PRI Show. Using a billet wheel with extensive R&D on blade pitch and shape, the team managed a 15 percent increase in airflow from standard hub designs.

By focusing on the size of the hub, the CTRX compressor reduces turbulence, intake air temperature, and rotational mass. The smoother airflow and efficiency translates to — of course — more power. The top dog of the lineup is the CT8RX-118112, with a 118mm inducer on the compressor wheel and a 112mm turbine. The big-boy turbo has an 8-inch inlet and 5-inch outlet with a 1.69 A/R compressor housing to produce an estimated 3,200 horsepower.

The CT8RX-118112 turbo is available in three different bearing options, all with patented triple ball bearings but oil-lubricated, oil-less air-cooled, and oil-less water-cooled. The turbine is available in 1.09, 1.25, or 1.41 A/R with a V-band. It is also available with a T6 inlet and 5-inch V-band out for 1.12, 1.24, and 1.40 A/R.

Perhaps one of the greatest testaments to Comp turbos is the endorsement of one of the winningest small-tire no-prep cars, and the newly-minted owner of the 26-inch tire record — the renowned “Beater Bomb.” Joey Hiykel famously would never let the Fox-body be seen with its hood off, but recently he pulled the front end off to reveal a big-block with a pair of Comp turbos. And now here it was for all the world to see at the biggest racing show on the planet.

The CTRX lineup covers combinations from 550 horsepower up to the 3,200-horsepower-capable CT8RX-118112, and displacements from 2.0L to 12.0 liters of engine displacement.
