Each year since their inception, Duck X Productions’ Lights Out events held at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Georgia have become known for racers looking to do the unthinkable – that is, by wrecking whatever standing elapsed time record there is in each individual race class.
This past Friday night, North Carolina’s Kevin Mullins did exactly that – taking Keith Berry’s Outlaw Drag Radial record and turning it upside down during the qualifying sessions for the Radial Vs. The World class at Lights Out V. Berry previously set the record last fall at Holly Springs’ Fall Brawl with a 4.19/185MPH eighth-mile blast and was not shy about taking to the track in Georgia to try to beat his own record at Lights Out V. Unfortunately for him, Mullins had other ideas – and proceeded to follow up on them.
After teasing the crowd during Thursday’s qualifying session with a 4.16, Friday night Mullins simply crushed Berry’s record by clicking off an unbelievable 4.117 at 193.90 MPH from his Harrell Engine & Dyno-powered twin-turbo Mustang using ProTorque‘s new Revolution Series II torque converter. Not only did he take the top spot in the class during Friday’s night session, he went back out on Saturday and lowered the record to a 4.113 at 194.30 MPH.Â
These are simply stunning numbers from a door car racing on a 315-60-15 radial tire. That’s a radial tire, folks! The insanity doesn’t seem to end with these cars, and it appears as if it’ll only be a matter of time before someone (Mullins, perhaps, or Berry or someone else) breaks into the 4.0’s and eventually the three-second range in this unstoppable class. As the racers continue to get a handle on power management and make use of the technological advances of the last few years, elapsed times will continue to drop. As it stands right now, that 4.11 pass equates to somewhere around a 6.30 in the quarter-mile. It truly defies belief.
