Millions of people have tuned in to watch No Prep Kings (NPK) on Discovery Channel, but what you see isn’t the full story. There’s a lot going on in the pits and behind-the-scenes for each of the teams who participate in NPK events. We got to hang out with “Disco” Dean Karns during the recent NPK race at National Trail Raceway (NTR) and see different aspects of how a race weekend works.
The new format for NPK events keeps teams very busy all weekend long. On Friday, the teams get two test hits before the first round of racing kicks off. This means the racers and tuners need to get as much good data as possible to help them put together fast passes the rest of the weekend. At the NTR event, Disco Dean made a lot of changes before racing began, so his test runs were more important than ever.
Once racing starts, the teams only have about 45 minutes between rounds, so there’s a lot going on in the pits. After each race, the drivers and tuners take a deep dive into the data from to see where they can improve. It’s not the most glamorous task, however, this is where races are won and lost so its very important. Disco Dean pulled the curtain back to show us how he goes over the data, and how he makes adjustments to go even faster.
You’ll want to check out this video we put together during the race. Disco Dean does a great job explaining what the team does and why the do it.
