Tuners and racers have vastly different requirements when it comes to camshafts. Even seemingly similar combinations can have wildly separate cam specs. Howards Cams, has been one of the leading manufacturers of high performance camshafts for many different applications, and now look forward to a speedier turnaround of custom grinds.
The company was founded in 1945, by Howard Johansen, originally as Howard’s Power & Racing Equipment, specifically as a manufacturer of racing cams. Howard’s son Jerry Johansen, took over the company in 1965 and was considered one of the top engine tuners of his day. Along with Don Madden, Jerry ran the “Howards Cams Rattler” and the “Howards Cams Special” Top Fuel racers as test beds for new products.
According to Howards Cams Sales and Tech Services Manager, Scott Scovronski, “Earlier this year we ordered a new Landis CNC Cam grinder, which we expect to be up and running by the beginning of 2017. This is going to mean faster turnaround for custom cams. Our typical custom grinds are usually two weeks. We should be able to get that down to a week!”
Based in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in a recently upgraded facility, Howards Cams has continued to innovate and provide builders with precise off the shelf and custom camshafts — including top circle track, drag racing, road racing and marine teams. Using the latest technology and data from race teams, Howards Cams continues to innovate and improve its products — the same way Jerry Johansen did so many years ago. The company also produces pistons and connecting rods.
