Trying to push a car into the single digits at the drag strip is something that takes effort and skill. Most people are able to reach the magical nine-second territory with the use of V8 displacement and a power adder, but Brad Gusler isn’t like most out there. Gusler was the first to push a four cylinder EcoBoost Mustang into the ten-second zone, and now he has smashed the nine-second barrier.
Since 2012, Gusler and his wife, Nina, have been competing in the NMRA, where they have both picked up wins in different classes. The husband and wife team both started racing EcoBoost Mustangs in 2015 when the car debuted. Besides setting the EcoBoost record, Gusler also won the EcoBoost Shootout at the NMRA World Finals in 2016.
The boosted four-banger that Gusler pilots has been upgraded with some great parts to make it so quick. Under the hood is a CP-E Stage 2 motor that gets its boost from a Precision turbo. Fuel comes into the 2.3 liter mill via an Aeromotive fuel pump and DeatschWerks fuel injectors. This combo helped motivate the Mustang to a 9.999 elapsed time at over 131 mph for the record.
Pushing a small displacement engine in a production car into the nine-second zone wasn’t easy at all for Gusler. “A lot of hard work and long hours went into the car and tuning it. I’m very thankful for my team and all the help that went into the car to make it happen. To finally get that nine-second pass was a huge achievement. Race Star Industries was our main sponsor in 2016 and was a huge help. We couldn’t race at this level without them,” Gusler says.
Gusler and his team have the goal to push their EcoBoost Mustang into the eight-second zone in 2017 with more hard work and help from the great people at Race Star Industries!
