Since it broke cover in 2023, the 1970 Chevelle belonging to Street Outlaws star Jerry Johnston, otherwise known as “Monza,” has been wowing drag racing enthusiasts with its awesome looks and big potential on the track. Recently, Johnston and his son Brandon took the Chevelle down to FuelTech in Ball Ground, Georgia, to have it tuned before it hits the track, and as you’ll see in the video, FuelTech’s Luis De Leon took full advantage of the insane car coming in by using the tuning session as part of a FuelTech education class that was happening that week.

While Monza has traditionally used nitrous oxide injection, and more recently, turbocharging as his power adders of choice, the powerplant in his Chevelle is yet another change as it is boosted by a ProCharger F-4X-140-1 centrifugal supercharger.

Built by CJ Race Cars in Lakeland, Florida, the Chevelle is packing yet another first for Johnston, that being one of Pro Line Racing’s MH7 Hemi engines. Cubic-inch displacement checks in at 564 and the Hemi engine is set up to burn alcohol and a whole lot of pressurized atmosphere.

Area 51 Racing wired and plumbed the Chevy that is also equipped with an M&M Transmission Turbo 400 and torque converter. When the power switch is on, the FuelTech FT600 ECU wields the FT 720 lb/hr injectors and FTSpark-8 Mini and CDI ignition.

Johnston brought the car to FuelTech to get the tune sorted out before it hits the track, and using FuelTech’s hub dyno, the staff was able to make simulated 60-foot and 330-foot runs to dial it in. Doing this means less wear and tear on the car to get it to be race-ready.

Johnston still hasn’t solidified his racing plans for 2024, but his “Bad Attitude” Chevelle is ready when he is.
