Meet Ronnie “Fofo” Foret and his newest project, a Don Ness-built ’02 Camaro. Plans are to campaign the car in the consistently fast class of Top Sportsman. To date, Ronnie and crew have run as quick as 7.01 at 197 MPH and a best short time of 1.06. Powered by a 638 cid BBC built by Scotty’s Race Engines, the engine features a Dart block, Brodix EPD cylinder heads, Callies crank, GRP 5500 ProMod Rods, Diamond pistons, and Moroso dry sump oiling system, topped off with dual carburetors and two stages of nitrous by Steve Johnson (one fogger and one Punisher).
The Camaro was bought complete as a “turn key” racecar but Ronnie wanted to change a few things. He and the crew added a new Powerglide transmission with a 1.80 first gear, a Neal Chance 4000 stall converter, and swapped the ring and pinion for a set of 4.10’s. Other changes include switching from a dual battery setup to using only a single 16volt battery, and moving the fuel cell and pump out of the trunk to the front of the car. And for some added safety, a second parachute was added. With all changes considered, the new race weight of the car and driver is now just 2,470lbs.
At the latest outing in Baytown ,TX. for the NHRA Texas Sportsman Shootout, Ronnie made it down to eight cars. However, due to inclement weather, the race was cut short and will continue October 22. Until then, the team plans on continuing to make changes and get the car dialed in. Lastly, Ronnie wanted to thank, Charlie and Karen Stelly, Brian Jeffery and Johnny Angelle for all their help with the car.
