Jim Halsey has turned Cecil County Dragway into a racer’s paradise thanks to the mixture of events that he has brought to the track. Halsey, a Pro Mod racer and champion himself, added the Pro Mod Invitational to the track’s NHRA Lucas Oil Series event. This race paid $50,000 to the winner, and featured some of the best Pro Mod pilots in the country. When the dust settled, Steve King was crowned the champion of the Pro Mod Invitational.

Not only did the racers have to battle each other, but they also had to contend with Mother Nature and her fits of rain-filled rage. The event was smacked with plenty of wet weather, and that ultimately led to just one round of qualifying on Saturday before eliminations began. Kurt Steading nailed down the top spot with a blistering 3.599 run. Steve King, Jeff Rudolf, Johnny Camp, Chuck Ulsch, Mike Decker Jr, Jim Halsey, Mike Decker III, Ken Quartuccio, and William Brown III rounded out the top half of the qualifying order.

This field was truly stacked with top-level teams, so winning any round was going to be tough. Steading sawed his way through the top half of the bracket on his way to meeting King in the final round. When the tree dropped, Steading went -.013 red on the way to running a 3.602, while King ripped off an impressive 3.596 pass. If Steading didn’t go red, it could have been the closest race of the weekend.
