These Are The Fresh Faces In New Places For The 2024 NHRA Season

The National Hot Rod Association’s (NHRA) new professional series title sponsor, billion-plus-dollar food manufacturer Mission Foods, isn’t the only new name that drag racing fans will have to acclimate to in the coming season, as 2024 will see the return of some of the sports’ most popular and decorated drivers, and arguably one of the strongest lists of Rookie of the Year candidates in history. That list includes three full-time and three new-part time Top Fuel drivers and/or teams, six-time world champion Jeg Coughlin’s return to Pro Stock, Lyle Barnett in a full-time ride in Pro Modified, a new face aligned with legend Jim Dunn, and a new tag-team in Pro Stock Motorcycle. And the “silly season” isn’t yet over, with 78 days remaining before the series opener, the fabled Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida, March 7-10.
Here’s a breakdown of the new names, new team owners and partnerships confirmed heading into 2024:

Tony Stewart, Top Fuel: Iconic driver Tony Stewart is set to make his debut in Top Fuel. This significant move comes as his wife, Leah Pruett, steps away from the seat, marking a new chapter for the couple as they plan to start a family. Following a successful stint in the Top Alcohol Dragster ranks last year, the former NASCAR and IndyCar world champion is poised for another remarkable venture in 2024.

Shawn Reed, Top Fuel: After several years away, Shawn Reed is making a return to the Top Fuel ranks. Set to become a full-time driver in 2024 under Shawn Reed Racing, he is not only taking on the role of owner/driver but also forging a technical and advancement alliance with three-time world champion Antron Brown. This strategic partnership positions Reed for success in the upcoming year.

Ida Zetterstrom, Top Fuel: The reigning European Top Fuel champion, Ida Zetterstrom, is making a bold move to NHRA in 2024 as part of JCM Racing. Although she plans to run a limited schedule next season, the anticipation is high as she aims to transition to full-time racing in 2025. Zetterstrom brings a significant fan following and excitement to the NHRA ranks with her 2024 debut.

Jacob McNeal, Top Fuel: Following his Top Fuel debut in 2023 with Scott Palmer Racing, Jacob McNeal has taken a significant step in the off-season. Now a Top Fuel team owner, McNeal is gearing up to compete in eight races next year. He acquired the Top Fuel operation of Buddy Hull and is set to collaborate with crew chief Mike Guger, realizing a dream come true.

nhra, jasmine Salinas

Jasmine Salinas, Top Fuel: Successful in the Top Alcohol Dragster ranks, Jasmine Salinas announced her transition to Top Fuel earlier this year. The excitement builds as she is scheduled to make her debut in 2024, racing alongside her father, Mike Salinas, in the talent-rich Top Fuel category, where her sister, Jianna, stands out in Pro Stock Motorcycle.

nhra, travis shumake

Travis Shumake, Top Fuel: Taking significant strides in his career this fall, Travis Shumake has earned his Top Fuel license, acquired his truck and hauler, and moved into a race shop in Indy. With a strong position heading into the new year, Shumake is expected to make his debut in the Top Fuel ranks in 2024.

nhra, buddy hull

Buddy Hull, Funny Car: After initiating his NHRA career in Top Fuel, Buddy Hull is making a switch to Funny Car. As the new driver for Jim Dunn Racing, the energetic and fan-favorite racer is gearing up for his first full season, presenting a promising opportunity in front of him.

Jeg Coughlin, Jr., Pro Stock: The legendary driver and five-time Pro Stock world champion, Jeg Coughlin, Jr., is coming out of retirement to run a full season in Pro Stock with Elite Motorsports. This move is part of several changes for the highly-successful team, including Bo Butner’s shift from Pro Stock to the Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage Mountain Motor Pro Stock category.

Sienna Wildgust, Pro Stock: Joining KB Titan Racing, Sienna Wildgust, who turns 18 in 2024, is currently in the licensing process in the Pro Stock class. While there isn’t a definitive date for her debut, both Wildgust and the team express ambitious intentions to make it happen in the upcoming year.

Chris Bostick, Pro Stock Motorcycle: Chris Bostick is set to join crew chief Tim Kulungian and the White Alligator Racing team for the 2024 season. This collaboration includes 2023 NHRA Rookie of the Year Chase Van Sant, adding to the strength of the team.

Mike Stavrinos, NHRA Pro Mod: In a significant career move, Mike Stavrinos is set to race for Mike Janis Racing in 2024 on the NHRA Pro Mod circuit. This opportunity marks a substantial step forward for Stavrinos, who joins one of the strongest teams in the competitive NHRA Pro Mod ranks.

Lyle Barnett, NHRA Pro Mod: The popular driver, who secured victory at the prestigious NHRA U.S. Nationals in 2022, is making a return to NHRA Pro Mod after a year away. Lyle is set to be part of Scott Tidwell Racing in 2024, continuing his journey in this exciting category.
