We found this really cool drag racing video on You Tube, it covers drag racing in the early ’70s, taking place at Bristol international raceway. When you look at the video it’s amazing to see how far drag racing has progressed. Everyone loves to compete in all types of sports, from playing a simple game of pool, to being a linebacker on a pro football team.
Drag racing is no exception, the video takes us to a place back in a time when pioneering shaped and formed the way the sport has evolved. With guys like Big Daddy Don Garlits, Don Prudomme, along with many others, helped make this sport what it is today.
It’s crazy to think that anyone was allowed to even organize a sport like this, just the lack of guardrails, proper safety equipment, and overall vehicle construction by today’s standards would be outlawed. Drag racing has come a long way in 40 years, you could never stand that close to the race cars of today’s era due to the fact that some of the Pro cars now reach speeds in excess of 300 miles per hour, much too dangerous to be standing on the sidelines.
For many of you guys that grew up during this time, it was a time when drag racing was fun and anyone could compete, it was pretty much anything goes as far as what you could race. It’s funny to see how back then you could bring in coolers full of drinks, stand just a few feet away from a blown funny car, or as a driver, expose yourself to a fiery hot burning engine just inches in front of your face.
Even with all the present day safety equipment missing, it’s still a cool video that shows us awesome footage of beautiful vintage cars, iconic drivers before they were famous, and lots of great memories…”Let’s go racing”!
