Francis Johnson, driving Adam Howard’s “Great White Shark” Mustang, is the wheelman for one of the hottest Outlaw Drag Radial teams competing at Maryland International Raceway on a regular basis, and this past weekend Johnson turned in one hell of a pass. Steven Auglis from TheRacingVids was there to capture it for posterity on video for the rest of us to enjoy from afar.
Heading into the event, held June 6th, Johnson was leading the points chase in the class but struggled during the qualifying sessions, allowing fellow racer Barry Mitchell to qualify at the top of the ladder. Johnson and Mitchell faced off during eliminations in the semifinal round, with Johnson losing the race due to a huge wheelstand — seeing Mitchell move on to the final round and win over Ziff Hudson to take the points lead away. However, Johnson was able to go home with some measure of satisfaction after this pass, made after the wheelstand and after the final round of competition.
Johnson and team checked out the car from the wheelstand, and when the “no damage” confirmation came through, they took the tree and proceeded to knock down the scoreboard with an incredible 4.21 at over 175 MPH, in the process clicking off a 1.11 short time and 2.84 330-foot time. It appears to us that he ate a few engine parts going through the traps at the same time, but we haven’t been able to confirm our armchair diagnosis.
Regardless, that’s one hell of a pass from a stock-suspension car no matter the circumstances. He was also 50 pounds heavier than the rules require for this combination.
If you can believe it, this car still uses stock-style suspension and a nitrous-injected engine – no blower, no turbo, no four-link or wheelie bars. Simply insane!
