If you weren’t there, you should have been. The 2013 edition of the Yellow Bullet Nationals held at Cecil County Dragway this past weekend was off the hook – records were set, wheelstands were shown, and the racing action was hot and heavy in every single class. Basically, it was a celebration of all things drag racing to close out the Labor Day weekend with a bang, in more ways that one.
We’ve talked about “Leaf Spring King” Ron Rhodes of Rhodes Custom Auto in Delaware before. Rhodes is one of those racers who just never quits, always searching to find the last little bit of power within his incredible Tony Bischoff-built, 23-degree-headed small-block Chevrolet engine, and this past weekend he rocked the world yet again in this incredible ’68 Camaro.
Rhodes has been told in the past that there’s no way his combination should be as quick as it is, yet he continues to run the number nearly every time out. Rhodes credits help from a lot of folks, notably John Calvert at Calvert Racing Suspensions for helping him to dial-in the leaf spring suspension under his machine. The pass was made with – get this – a 1.10 short time and 3.05 to the 330 foot mark for a final tally of 4.67 at 149 MPH. Now that’s gettin’ it done on the small tire!
Rhodes credits son and crew chief Ronny for getting him lined up in the groove all weekend long, as he placed runner-up to the incredibly-tough Bruder Brothers in the X275 final round. Rhodes is proud of Ronny’s own racing exploits during his first weekend in the seat, where he qualified No. 16 in the tough Ultra Street field before going down to Nicky Bernardo on a holeshot in the first round of competition.
Thanks to Steve Auglis from TheRacingVids for the footage of Ron’s incredible 4.67 blast – it’s just unreal to see a car running this quickly with the components Rhodes has onboard, and we’re glad we got to see it!
