Kansas doorslammer racer Brandon Sandlian went for a wild ride at last weekend’s H-Town Throwdown, a sanctioned legal street race that takes place annually in the small town of Hartshorne, Oklahoma (population fewer than 2,000).

Sandlian, driving his supercharged 1953 Studebaker that’s clicked off runs in the 3.8-second range on prepped tracks, lost traction and then control early in his second round Big Tire run with Bobby Treadwell, as the car hopped the curb, hooked to the left, and rolled, striking a power pole in the process. Fortunately, the event promoters, who present proceeds to local community groups, took all of the necessary precautions to keep spectators safely away from the race cars and had emergency personnel on-site, limiting injuries only to Sandlian’s pocketbook. Sandlian, likewise, confirmed he takes his safety seriously, and emerged from the battered but certainly not destroyed ‘Stude with little more than a bump on the elbow.

Sandlian was smiling and upbeat, but at the same time disappointed to see the state of his racecar, which he said, contrary to popular belief, is more than “just a racecar,” and he vowed to repair the chassis, re-body the car, and forge on. In subsequent statements since returning home to survey the damage, he has confirmed the car will indeed be repaired this offseason.
