Ever get a birds-eye view of a big-mouth SV1 carb in action? Check out this video from Fig Performance Racing Engines of a 632ci big-block built by Mike Fig and George Landis on the dyno. Just watch for the single throttle plate opening and the dual booster tubes doing their job of delivering fuel to the thirsty Rat!!
With a goal of running in the low 8s in the NMCA and Super Chevy True Street classes, Landis and Fig assembled a stout but streetable foundation that will get a big shot of nitrous when needed at the track.
“The nitrous is where all the power is going to come from,” promises Landis.
The all-alloy bullet starts with a Merlin X tall-deck block that is fitted with a Callies 4.75-inch stroke crank, Callies Ultra 6.700-inch long steel rods and Ross 4.600-inch diameter small-dome pistons that are wrapped with Akerly & Childs rings. Compression ratio is 13.2:1.
Two views of the engine and the '68 Camaro that will benefit from the power.
The Dart Big M 410 heads come with 2.35/1.80 stainless-steel valves and are topped with a manifold from Sonny’s Racing that was plumbed with 2-stage nitrous system by Induction Solutions. Motivating the valves is a Comp Cams solid roller camshaft. Ignition is provided by MSD and Moroso handles the oiling and vacuum.
“Basically it’s an inefficient engine naturally aspirated and efficient as a nitrous engine,” says Landis.
However, the dyno doesn’t lie.
“We’re in the 1,040 range on muscle alone with the SV1,” sums up Landis. “And we’re looking for 1,600 with spray!”
