Canadian drag racer Carl Brunet showed up at the World Cup Finals at Maryland International Raceway hoping to take home a trophy in the Outlaw vs Extreme class. He entered the event with the distinction of being the quickest driver to a quarter mile on four cylinders with a run of 6.71 seconds at 207 MPH. Believe it or not, Carl smashed his own record in the 2nd round of eliminations on Sunday when he ran an incredible 6.466 at 218 MPH! That is staggeringly quick for a four cylinder vehicle. Carl’s record setting car is powered by a 1,400 horsepower, turbocharged Ecotec engine and is tuned by his brother Nicholas. Thanks to a massive 82mm turbocharger, this four-cylinder engine makes eight-cylinder power.
With that run, Carl appeared to be the racer to beat, but in the semifinals his car broke a driveshaft right after the 1/8th mile causing it to get out of control and crash. The car got loose in its own fluids and suddenly made a hard turn to the right causing a violent head on crash into the wall. The safety staff at MIR rushed to the scene and thankfully found that Carl was not injured in the crash. He has vowed to fix the car and be back at the WCF next year to win the coveted Giant Silver Cup Trophy.
