Chuck Ulsch's Outlaw 10.5 Camaro at the April Outlaw Streetcar Shootout

Cecil County in Rising Sun Maryland hosts the Outlaw Street Car Shootout sponsored by Finishline Performance in Delaware every first Saturday of the month starting in April and running through November. Since it is now April race season is among us! An Outlaw 275 Radial class has been added to the mix along with the other classes that run like Outlaw 10.5, Outlaw Radial, Outlaw 8.50 Index, and Outlaw 7.50 Index.

The weather for the first Shootout was beautiful and the fans came out in droves to see the first event of the year for all the Outlaw cars. Big hitters such as Chuck Ulsch, Mo Hall, Larry Wood and Tom Ferrick (who won the Outlaw 10.5 race at Shakedown @ E-Town) were on hand trying to nail down the first Outlaw Street Car Shootout win.

Notable racers who were here but didn’t make the field were Joe Newsham who was out in his twin turbo Camaro. Newsham’s Mustang was totaled at the Shakedown event but he is out in the new car trying to duplicate his success from last year’s Outlaw Street Car Shootouts. Another notable was T.J. Kasper in Tim Lynch’s old twin turbo Mustang.

In the first round of qualifying Kasper got out of it early and pulled over as he put some oil down on the track. The Gil Christy team thrashed the night before to get the transmission fixed so a tough break for the Kasper team. In Outlaw Radial Alex Vrettos beautiful yellow Mustang wasn’t on the grounds since it is still at DMC getting a few things finished up.  Paul Major was here in his Corvette but not his twin turbo machine, he was here in his 66 Vette that he drives on the street. The newest class added to the Outlaw Street Car Shootout is Outlaw 275 Radial. Last year Chris Evans partnered up with Matt Butrim running in Outlaw Radial running a BBC to the tune of 4.70’s to the 1/8 mile but this year Evans is running the 275 class with a SBF and an F1R Procharger. Last weekend at Maryland International Raceway Evans ran a 5.03 and put everyone on notice that he will be at the top of the field at the 275 races!

Outlaw 10.5 Recap

The field in Outlaw 10.5 had 16 cars gunning for the 8 car qualified field.  In the second round of qualifying Chuck Ulsch laid down a 4.201 at 183.12 to blow away the rest of the field. The number two qualifier was a 4.429 at 164.91. The screw blown machine of Chuck Ulsch was heads above the rest of the field! The field had Chuck Ulsch number one with a 4.201 at 183, Mo Hall #2 @ 4.429 at 164, Scott Gaudgano 4.431 at 172, Michael Martin 4.454 @ 163, Doug Harris 4.484 @ 169, Larry Wood 4.555 @ 164, Brad Harris 4.636 @ 162 and Tom Ferrick rounding out the 8 car field with a 4.725 @ 152. First round had Mo Hall up against Brad Harris with Mo Hall taking the stripe with a 4.50 @ 157.

Doug Harris and Michael Martin were next up with Doug Harris taking the win with a 4.39 @ 170. Chuck Ulsch was up next against Tom Ferrick where Ulsch took the win with a 4.21 @ an incredible 190 MPH to the 1/8 mile. The last two cars up were Larry Wood and Scott Gaudagno. Gaudagno almost crashed and hit the 1/8 mile timing block so he was DQ’d and Larry Wood moved on to the 2^nd round. Round two Chuck Ulsch was taking on Doug Harris. Harris killed Ulsch on the tree with an .006 reaction to Ulsch’s 0.104 reaction but the screw blown power was able to move past Harris with a 4.25 @ 188 to Harris’ 4.39 @ 159. Mo Hall was up next against Larry Wood and Hall took the win with a 4.48 @ 162. Wood got loose and lifted to Hall was easily able to take the win. In the finals Mo Hall was a no show since he has a bad axle bearing so Ulsch had a single and tried to get the Screw Blown Camaro into the teens but he got loose and had to pedal to a 5.51 @ 92.

Billy Dutka & Brett Hull - Outlaw Radial Cars

Outlaw Radial had eight cars show up so everyone made the field.  John Carter in his gorgeous 04 Vette was the number one qualifier with a 5.03 @ 152. Steve Petty of Proline was in attendance helping tune Carter’s Vette, number 2 qualifier was Bill Dutka in his 79 Malibu with a 5.33 @ 132, Brett Hul was qualified number 3 with a 5.585 @ 105. Hull pulled the chutes right at the 1/8 mile for some unknown reason. Number 4 qualifier was Quentin Metheny with a 5.769 @ 126, number 5 was Vincent Fiore with a 6.373 @ 110, number 6 Gary Gonzalez with a 6.404 @ 82, number 7 Gary Kramer with a 6.456 @ 103, and Paul Major rounded out the field with a 7.486 @ 91.

In the first round Brett Hull had a single as Gonzalez wasn’t able to make the call. Hull went 5.330 @ 142. The next pair up was Bill Dutka and Gary Kramer neither car waited for the tree as Dutka left first and then Kramer reacted and left so both cars were disqualified. John Carter was up next in his 04 Vette against Paul Major. Carter was on and off the throttle and ran a 5.29 @ 127 to take the win over Major.

The next pair up were Vincent Fiore and Quentin Methany with Methany taking the win with a 5.30 @132. Second round had John Carter lined up against Quentin Methany and Carter went in first and Carter was dead late on the tree and held on for the HUGE upset holeshot win with a 5.31 @ 132 to a faster 5.01 @ 160. Methany’s reaction was .051 to Carter’s late 0.361. Brett Hull got the solo as both Kramer and Dutka were disqualified. Hull has serious traction issues. In the finals Brett Hul was taking on Quentin Methany. Methany lit the tires on the hit and Hull spun too but peddled it for the win. He didn’t exactly have the best day in the world but he gets the win light for the first radial event of the year!

Outlaw 275 Recap

The eight car field had Chris Evans #1 with a 5.12 @ 140, Ron Rhodes #2 with a 5.259 @132, Steve Drummond number 3 with a 5.299 @132, Ed Thomas #4 with a 5.333 @134, Tony Parsons with a 5.505 @130, Robert Falcone number 6 with 5.572 @125, Mike Thompson #7 with a 5.658 @127, and Tim Reinert rounded out the field with a 5.706 @122. The first round had Chris Evans and Tim Reinart up against each other. Evans spun the tires and got back into it to take the win over Reinart who had some problems. Ron Rhodes broke so Corupt Motorsports Konstantine Zografos gets into the field as the alternate. Zografos was up against Mike Thompson, Zografos is  still having problems staging the car so Thompson took the win with a 5.37 @130 really stepping up from his qualifying efforts.

Next up was Robert Falcone and Steve Drummond. Falcone took the win over Drummond who’s beautiful Mustang caught fire on the line when he went to launch the car. No damage but Falcone took the win with a 6.5 @120. Ed Thomas was up next against Tony Parsons but Parson couldn’t make the call due to breakage so Thomas had the single and steps it up with a 5.19 @135. Thomas hung the wheels up in the air on beautiful run!

Round 2 had Robert Falcone and Mike Thompson against each other and Thompson stepped his previous time up a bit more with a 5.33 @130 over a losing 5.64 @125. The next pair up were number one qualifier Chris Evans and Ed Thomas. Evans couldn’t keep the front end down and Thomas was able to go by and take the win with a 5.18 @137. The finals paired up Mike Thompson who last year was a front runner in the Outlaw 8.50 Index racing finishing number 2 to T.J. Kasper. Thompson now on the 275 Radial ran very consistent and took the win over Thomas with a holeshot win with a 5.34 @130 over the losing 5.29 @134.

Outlaw 8.50 Index

Outlaw 8.50 always one of the most competed classes in the Outlaw Shootout series had 19 cars vying to get in the 16 car field. Al Fonse in his beautiful all motor 93 Camaro had the top spot with an 8.505 @ 160. The tough field was tightly contested but the most consistent car won this weekend with Harry Gerb taking the win over Angelo Valla. Gerb tree’d Valla and ran an 8.590 @ 143 over Valla’s 8.71 @ 156.

Outlaw 7.50 Index

Qualifying had John Schroeder, last years champ, taking the top spot with a 7.534 @ 184. Behind him in the number two spot was Jimmy Reuter with a 7.622 178, number three Steve Willingham with a 7.649 @188, number four Rick Righter with a 7.652 @184, number five was Pete Pace with a 7.869 @144 and rounding out the field was John Fisher with a 10.756 @73.

In the first round Schroeder had a bye and ran a 7.48 @185, Jimmy Reutter and Pete Pace were up next with Reutter taking the win with a 7.62 over a losing 7.84. The next pair up were Rick Righter and Steve Willingham. Righter had problems and took a while to get going and sounded pretty cool actually because the car made a loud bang and away it went haha. Willingham took off and never looked back in his twin turbo Mustang for the win. Round 2 John Schroeder has a single and he just takes the treet and coasts down the track for the win. Jimmy Ruetter and Steve Willingham were up and Willingham took the win with an 8.47 over a losing 9.85. Reutter got the jump on Willingham and then he got all crossed up and Willingham takes the win who got out of it when he saw Reutter moving around. The finals was a the number 1 and number two racers in points from last season with Schroeder coming out on top with a 7.75 easily taking the win over Willingham who got out of it early.

The first race of the 2010 season for the Outlaw Streetcar Shootout was a huge success and the rest of the season looks very promising as other racers will be joining the different classes as the season progresses. So everyone keep the first Saturday’s of every month open and head down to Cecil County Dragway in Maryland to see some great heads up action and some very competitive classes.
